Senator Jacobs Opposes the Repeal of the Death Penalty
The death penalty repeal must be opposed for the safety of
our corrections officers.
Despite what those supporting the repeal state, studies from
across the country have shown that the death penalty can be a
deterrent. Depending on the state, statistically each execution
can prevent between 4 to 18 murders.
Not only is the death penalty a deterrent, but it is also a just
punishment for the crime. The victims did not have a choice on
whether they would be brutally raped and tortured before being
killed, and yet the perpetrator receives decades of review.
Supporters argue that the costs of the army of review that
occurs at all levels of the appellate process as a justification
for eliminating the death penalty. Eliminating the review
process could very well cause innocent men and women to remain
in jail for life. As a result, the cost is not relevant, unless
those supporters of the repeal believe it is acceptable for
individuals to be in jail for life.
Senator Jacobs released the following statements concerning the
repeal:
“Corrections Officers and police who daily put their lives in
harms way to protect society as a whole deserve protection. What
will stop a prisoner serving life in prison without parole from
trying to kill a corrections officer? What justice is gained for
the guard that is killed by adding another life sentence? Once
they are in jail, any other murders they commit are freebies.
“Unlike many other Senators involved in this debate, I have
witnessed the death penalty carried out. I believe there is
nothing cruel and unusual about the punishment, especially when
you consider it in light of the heinous crimes these murderers
committed.”
“Those individuals who support this repeal should have to go to
the families of those victims who have been tortured, raped, and
killed and tell the family why that person who brutally murdered
their loved one deserves to live.
“When a society stops having just punishments for crimes, the
very fabric of our civil order begins to tear.”
