SJ 5 – Makes Our Country Vulnerable
Today Senator Nancy Jacobs heard testimony concerning SJ 5
REAL ID – Protest and Repeal. Senator Jacobs believes the
resolution places Maryland in extreme danger.
REAL ID also protects our country from terrorism. The resolution
is inherently wrong when it states REAL ID has “no attendant
benefit such as protection from terrorism.” Mohammad Atta, the
ringleader of the 9/11 attacks on this country and the pilot of
the plane that hit the first World Trade Center Tower, was an
illegal immigrant and received a drivers license. Our state
police pulled Atta over on his way to Boston to commit the
attacks. Had Atta not possessed a valid drivers license, the
police would have arrested him and performed a background check
that would have determined he was in this country illegally. If
REAL ID was implemented this attack could have been averted.
If Maryland does not implement the REAL ID standards and the
federal government does not change its regulations, the impact
on the citizens of Maryland will be great. Maryland Drivers
licenses will no longer be able to be used to get on airplanes,
enter federal buildings, open checking accounts, and much more.
A passport would have been required for all these things.
Senator Jacobs released the following statements concerning SJ

“REAL ID is one more invaluable tool in the global War on
Terror.”
“REAL ID increases the difficultly for terrorists to get drivers
licenses, which in turn, makes it more difficult for them to
attack us.”
“This Resolution wants to allow illegal immigrants to continue
to get drivers licenses in Maryland and the people of Maryland
do not want it.”
“In the last 4 months 3 Marylanders were killed by illegal
immigrants with drivers licenses. This cannot continue.“
“Public anger will swell when the first Marylander is not able
to get on their flight with their Maryland drivers license.”
