Governor O'Malley and Special Session Tax Decisions: What you need to know.

Governor Martin O’Malley has called the Maryland General Assembly into a “special session” to address his plans for new taxation and new spending.  The governor’s plan includes increases to the sales tax, income tax, gas tax, expansion of the sales tax to cover commonly used services, tobacco tax, and corporate taxes.  Increases will hurt Marylanders directly and indirectly.  No Marylanders “benefit” under Governor O’Malley’s tax-and-spend plan, but many already overburdened families pay more.

Many concerned Marylanders have written to me about the tax increases and asked what can I do to help?  I like to tell them about how concerned citizens shut down Annapolis with their phone calls, e-mails, and rallies to pass Jessica’s Law -- a law that creates mandatory minimum sentences without parole for child sex offenders.  The same can happen with tax increases, but decision-making officials need to hear from you!

I would recommend first contacting your representatives.  If you’re not sure who you representatives are you can go to http://mdelect.net and input your mailing address to find out. 

Next attend the anti-tax rally on Lawyer’s Mall where legislators, the Governor, and media will hear the voice of Marylander’s loud and clear.  E-mail or call key staff for Governor O’Malley and of the legislative leadership.  E-mail or call key committee members. 

1)  Attend Anti-Tax Rally in Annapolis on Monday, October 29, 2007 from 4-6PM at Lawyer’s Mall (State Capitol) to protest new taxation.

What: Rally Against Tax Increases
Where: Lawyer’s Mall (located between 15 and 16 on map: http://www.msa.md.gov/msa/mdmanual/37mun/annapolis/html/mapgovbldg.html )
When: Monday, October 29, 2007 from 4pm to 6pm.  Attendees are encouraged to visit legislators before or after the rally and to stay for the beginning of the 2008 Special Taxing Session at 8pm.
Parking:  Parking is available at the Naval Academy for $5 and a shuttle service is provided into Annapolis.  Shuttle drivers will be familiar with letting you off at Lawyer’s Mall.
